The House of Data

After having won the TrekBBS forum art challenge in April 2012, it was my turn to come up with a theme for the May art challenge. I had recently fallen in love with "Game of Thrones" on HBO, a series based on George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" books, and I was fascinated with the attention to detail in them, particularly with the various sigils and coats of arms each noble house possessed.

The challenge was to pick a character (or group of characters) from any Trek series or movie and come up with a design that that person may conceive if he/she/it were to create their own coat-of-arms. I chose Data. I figured that, since Data was an extremely rare individual, he might have started his own family crest. I based the overall design on those family crest printouts you can order at places like Colonial Williamsburg or EPCOT Center

Symbolism meaning:

Funny thing is, Data was never actually my favorite character on the show, but it made sense to me that he would have made his own coat of arms as a part of his own self-discovery and self-awareness, analyzing the most important and significant aspects of his life, whether enjoyable (playing the violin, time in Starfleet, Spot, etc.) or not so much (Lore, the Dominion War/fighting with the Borg in First Contact, learning the true nature of B-4, etc.) - all things that made him who he was on his journey to know what it was to be human.

I didn't win that month's challenge, but I still found it an enjoyable experience to try something new besides my usual starship panorama.
